On 25 September 2023, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) started the consultation on harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) of the chelating agents, Sodium EDTMP and Potassium EDTMP used in cosmetics. The European cosmetics industry, through the body Cosmetics Europe, presents the following position on the restriction of synthetic polymer microparticles (microplastics) intentionally added to cosmetic products.
The consultation on the proposed restriction of approximately 10,000 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) submitted by five national authorities in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, which opened on 22 March 2023, has recently concluded. On 27 September 2023, the Official Journal of the European Union published Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, amending Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) as regards synthetic polymer microparticles.
On 25 September 2023, the European Commission adopted measures that restrict microplastics intentionally added to products amending Annex XVII to EU REACH Regulation. The new rules will prohibit the sale of microplastics as such, and of products to which microplastics have been added on purpose and that release those microplastics when used. Read more…
On 25 September 2023, the European Commission published Questions and Answers on restrictions on microplastics intentionally added to products under the EU chemical legislation REACH.
On 22 September 2023, the SCCS published the final scientific advice on the safety of children’s exposure to Methyl Salicylate (methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate, CAS/EC No. 119-36-8/204-317-7) as used in cosmetic products. The SCCS adopted this document by written procedure on 14 September 2023.
