On 25 September 2023, the European Commission adopted measures that restrict microplastics intentionally added to products amending Annex XVII to EU REACH Regulation. The new rules will prohibit the sale of microplastics as such, and of products to which microplastics have been added on purpose and that release those microplastics when used. Derogations and transition periods will be granted, to allow affected parties adequate time to adjust to the new rules apply.
