On 31 May and 1 June 2022, the SCCS meeting of the Working Group (WG) on cosmetic ingredients in cosmetic products was held.
From 3 June 2022, hair and eyelash dye products containing the following hair dye ingredients shall not be made available on the Union market.
Octocrylene (CAS no 6197-30-4) and Benzophenone-3 (CAS no 131-57-7) are currently authorized cosmetic ingredients used as UV filters in cosmetic products. Considering the concerns related to their potential endocrine-disrupting properties, SCCS carried out a safety assessment for both substances.
Two cosmetic ingredients are affected by the proposals for consultation on harmonised classification and labelling (CLH). The CLH consultation on Nitrous Oxide has just launched, while Silver has been under opinion development by the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) on the proposed CLH.
The Scientific Committee has published its final Opinion on 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC). It was adopted by written procedure on 29 April 2022.
For a number of cosmetic products, inhalation is also a potential exposure route. Below there are some examples of cosmetic products in which inhalation exposure is relevant under the normal and foreseeable use of this product category:
The Swedish Medical Products Agency published the results of the last supervisory project conducted last year (in 2021). On 29 April 2022, the SCCS meeting of the Working Group (WG) on nanomaterials in cosmetic products was held.
On 5 April 2022, the European Commission started a consultation inviting any interested parties to submit data aiming to identify the various salicylic esters used in cosmetic products that are metabolised to Salicylic Acid. Spain has a voluntary labelling system for the packaging of domestic products aiming to inform citizens about the correct separation, and disposal. Interestingly, although it is not mandatory, most of the products available on the market, have information on the correct separation of packaging waste.
