On 4 December 2023, the Parliament and Council reached a provisional agreement on the proposed regulation establishing a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for sustainable products. The new regulation replaces the existing 2009 directive and enlarges the scope of the current legislation (up to now limited to energy-related products) to set the performance and information requirements for all kinds of products (including cosmetic products) placed in the EU market. The new regulation aims to make products last longer, use energy and resources more efficiently, easier to repair and recycle, contain fewer substances of concern and include more recycled content. Specific product requirements will be outlined by the Commission through secondary legislation.
